1.7 Main body

Research articles are generally written in four sections, include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. The rationale and background of the study or observation must be stated, directly relevant references given, and the purpose of the study given. In particular, be sure to give published references for sources that deal with food safety incidents, statistics, etc. Do not include data and conclusions of the paper.

The theoretical basis and background are clarified in this section, the related references and the purpose of this study should be indicated directly. It should give a short, clear account of the background and reasons for undertaking the study. In particular, the information sources related to food safety incidents, statistical data and other information sources should provide public references It should not include the data and conclusions of this paper, and should not be a review of the literature.

1.7.2 Materials and methods

Mainly explain the research materials (source and specifications), reagents (purity, manufacturer), instruments (model and name of manufacturer in brackets), methods and basic research process. The description should be concise and should indicate the source of cited literature in order to ensure reliability of the study and allow others to verify the experiment according to the content.

1.7.3 Results and analysis

Describe observed results in the main text and figures in logical order, and analyze these results. Avoid repeating tabular data in the main text; data should not be presented both in text and in figures or tables. Statistical data must include the statistical method and format of expression. Avoid single-line graphs and single-group data tables. Sample sizes and standard deviations should be provided for all data in figures and tables.

1.7.4 Discussion and conclusion

Emphasize the innovative and important findings in this study, the limitations and the conclusions drawn from them. Do not repeat data or other information given in the Introduction or the Results section. The potential impacts and implications, which should be linked to the studys findings, may be discussed for further research. The summary of the innovative results in this paper should include a comparative analysis with existing literature.

1.8 Hierarchical structure

Each section should be leveled and numbered with Arabic numerals which should be written in the left top grid, and the title of the section should be written following one space after the serial number. Serial numbers at second and above levels are separated by dots, and do not add the dot after the last digit, for example 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, do not use four-level titles, instead, use (1) or 1) for four-level titles.

1.9 Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the main body. They should be concise, and self-explanatory, use Chinese to express. English abbreviations should be indicated in the note. The tables and figures should not repeat the same data. Write the the text first, then the tables and figures.

1.9.1 Tables

Table should include both Chinese and English captions, and should be formatted as three-line tables. They should be accurate, understandable, and meet the statistical requirements. Symbols used for annotations in the table can be in the following order: *, #, △,☆, ▲, ★, **, # #, △△, etc., and should be marked sequentially in the table notes.

1.9.2 Figures

A figure should be accompanied by both Chinese and English titles with corresponding explanations, which should be placed below figure as figure notes. The resolution of black and white figures and color figures should be lower than 600 dpi. Line drawings should be clearly, of uniform thickness and tidy with a suitable height-width ratio. Horizontal and vertical headings should be concise, scale inward, and must be marked with units of measures with international unit symbols. Quantities and units of symbols and acronyms should be consistent with those cited in the text. Photo diagram should be clear and good contrast. Letters, numbers and symbols in the figure should be clear, with a font size no less than six pounds. Color pictures should be in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) mode, rather than the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) mode. Micrographs should be labelled with magnification and method of staining, and the portion to be shown should be placed in the centre of the photograph or marked with an arrow. If a figure or table is quoted from other publications, the source should be acknowledged and a written permission for its use should be acknowledged and written permission from the copyright holder for its use should be submitted.

1.10 Terminology

Terms validated by the National Natural Science Terminology Committee are regarded as the standard ones. Chinese and foreign terms should be used in their full names, abbreviations on first appearance present in parentheses. The names of the drugs should be based on the latest version of the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China and China Approved Drug Names are acceptable.

1.11 Units of measurement

The use of legal units of measurement should be adopted. A combination of unit symbols should only contain one slash, such as mg/kg, mmol/L, etc., but if there are two or more units, utilize the form of a negative power, for example,“ng/(kg·min)” can be replaced by “ng·kg-1·min-1” instead of “ng/kg/min” or “ng/kg·min-1. A percentage sign should be added after both numbers such as 40%~60%; an area should be written as 2 cm×3 cm; volume is expressed by length×weight×height, for example, 2 cm×3 cm×4 cm. Non-standardized unit symbols should be avoided, for example, "rpm" should be written as “r/min”, concentration units of M should be written as “mol/L” instead of concentration equivalent N.

1.12 Number

Arabic numerals should be utilized wherever possible and suitable. When a series of values have the same unit of measurement, it is sufficient to indicate the unit after the last value, for example, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol/L. For a range of values with the same unit, the previous unit of measurement may be omitted, for example, 3~6 kg. Other acceptable expressions are 4×109~7×109 or (4~7) ×109, (25±1)℃. A percentage of the mean ± standard deviation should be expressed as (40.5±0.6)%. A complete number is not shifted. Fractions are written horizontally, such as 2/6, 4/7. Round 4 down, 6 up, and 5 to the nearest even number.

1.13 Statistical symbols

Statistical symbols are in italics, such as P (probability), x? (arithmetic mean of the sample), s (standard deviation), Sx (standard error), t (t-test), F (F-test), X² (chi-square test), r (correlation coefficient), v (degrees of freedom), etc.

1.14 References

Journals or books published in recent years and read by the author. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text with sequence number in square brackets at the upper right corner. References in articles of literature reviews should have no less than 50 items, and in other papers no less than 30 items. References from the last 2 years are required to avoid aging of references. Pay attention to ensure the accuracy of the references. Names of authors of references should be all indicated if there are three or less authors;for four or more authors, only list the first three authors followed by “et al”. Authors’ names should be separated by commas. For author's name in English, first list the family name then the acronym of the given name. Journal titles in the references should be abbreviated to their standard abbreviations according to those by Index Medicus. English references are also required for Chinese references.

The choice of reviewers is at the editors’ discretion. To expedite the review process, only papers that seem most likely to meet editorial criteria are sent for external review. Papers judged by the editors to be of insufficient general interest or otherwise inappropriate are rejected promptly without external review. The editors then make a decision based on the reviewers' evaluations:

Revise, with the author addressing concerns raised by the reviewers before a final decision is reached.

Rejections are usually due to lack of novelty of the paper, poor scientific standards, significant test method or design omissions, plagiarism, etc.
